Notable historical empires include those of Cush, Egypt, Persia, Rome, Arabic, China, Britain, and the United States. Some of these empires lasted hundreds of years. The Bible tells us about the Kingdom begun by King David. It began when he ascended the throne after the death of Saul. God promised to establish David’s throne forever. His kingdom was divided after the death of his son Solomon, and was interrupted during the long years of exile. Still, God’s promise is to be fulfilled. We read in Psalm 89 God’s declaration to fulfill the covenant he made to David some 500 years before then. The psalmist expressed great confidence that despite the interruption of the exile God would still keep his word. The psalmist wrote, “The LORD said, ‘I have made a covenant with David, my chosen servant. I have sworn this oath to him: I will establish your descendants as kings forever; they will sit on your throne from now until eternity.’” Jesus the Christ is a descendant of King David. After his resurrection, God exalted His Son to be ruler over heaven and earth. Jesus the Christ will fulfill the promise God made to David more than 3,000 years ago.
