One source says most wives look to their husbands for at least four things: 1) open, honest, and consistent communication; 2) physical, emotional, and financial protection; 3) quality and quantity time; and 4) continuous pursuit—that is, don’t let romance fade as the marriage matures. Presumably, when wives get this kind of attention, they respond as Solomon’s bride did as we find in the Song of Songs, chapter 5. The young women of Jerusalem ask the beloved wife, “Why is your lover better than all others? What makes your lover so special?” She responds by describing her man from head to toe: “My lover is dark and dazzling, better than ten thousand others! His head is finest gold; his wavy hair is black as a raven. His eyes sparkle like doves beside springs of water; they are set like jewels washed in milk. His cheeks are like gardens of spices giving off fragrance. His lips are like lilies, perfumed with myrrh. His arms are like rounded bars of gold, set with beryl. His body is like bright ivory. … His legs are like marble pillars set in sockets of finest gold. His posture is stately, like the noble cedars of Lebanon. His mouth is sweetness itself, he is desirable in every way. Such, O women of Jerusalem, is my lover, my friend.” Marital love today still deserves long-term commitments, sealed with a covenant and a ring.
