Ticks had often bitten a man who loved deer hunting. He was convinced that he had deer tick disease and would pass it on to his wife. Doctors tested him and assured him that he did not have it; and that even if he did, he could not pass it to his wife. Still, he was so full of fear that he killed his wife and then himself. Fear can distort a person’s sense of reality; it can consume your energy, your thoughts, and bring you under its control. That is one reason Jesus gave his disciples and all believers the promise of His peace. In John 14 He said, “I am leaving you with a gift — peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid.” Peace is the total well-being and inner rest of spirit for those who are in fellowship with God. God gives this gift of His peace to His children. God’s Spirit lives inside of those who accept Jesus Christ as their Savior. Apart from Christ, peace is no more than a longing or a wish. What Jesus gives His children is true and real, and present. The more we fellowship with Him, the more real His peace becomes. When stresses overtake us, there is no better place to be than in a close relationship with God. Faith in God and in His Son can give us peace of mind that is beyond human understanding.
