Even though Flip Wilson made a lot of people laugh when he said, “the devil made me do it,” we know in our hearts that we are responsible for the decisions we make, and the things we do. At the same time, people of faith know that God has promised to help us resist the urges of our flesh when we rely on Him. That is what the Apostle Paul told the Corinthian believers. He wrote in 1 Corinthians Chapter 10, “The temptations in your life are no different from what others experience. And God is faithful. He will not allow the temptation to be more than you can stand. When you are tempted, he will show you a way out so that you can endure.” As God’s inspired apostle, Paul informs us that others have faced the same temptation we face. He assures us that we can trust God to help us say no whenever a test or temptation comes our way. And he assures us that when we face temptation we can be sure that God is not trying to destroy us; so he will not allow anything to come our way that we cannot resist. Our challenge is to ask God for help, trust Him to help us, and take the first step away from the allurement. That way, we can get away from the excuse of saying the devil made me do it.
