Farmers know they have to harvest their crops at just the right time—too soon or too late can be the difference between a profitable or losing year. Timing was also critical when Christ entered the world. The Romans had put down most rebellions and built good roads that made travel easy to carry the Gospel. Greek as the common language made communication easy. Most people were weary of eastern religions and joined with Jews in yearning for a Messiah to appear. All this was God’s timing for His Son to appear. Paul calls this junction of events the fullness of time. He writes in Galatians 4:7, “When the right time came, God sent his Son, born of a woman, subject to the law. God sent him to buy freedom for us who were slaves to the law, so that he could adopt us as his very own children. And because we are his children, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, prompting us to call out, ‘Abba, Father.’ Now you are no longer a slave but God’s own child. And since you are his child, God has made you his heir.” All who accept Jesus Christ as their Savior need no longer try to satisfy God by their futile efforts. We are now children of God by faith in Christ. As God’s dear children, we inherit eternal life with all its extensive benefits. Even now, we can enjoy intimacy with God because His Spirit came at just the right time and lives within us.
