Experts have several ways to tell if gold is real. But the acid test is when a drop of nitric acid is placed on gold. If there is no chemical reaction, gold experts say most likely it’s genuine. But how can we know following Christ is the right choice to give us life here and hereafter. Let’s face it, it is a matter of faith, yet our faith is based on certain facts. The Apostle John wrote a letter to assure believers they had not made a mistake when they chose to follow Christ. He wrote in 1 John 5, “I have written this to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know you have eternal life.” He later says, “We know that the Son of God has come, and he has given us understanding so that we can know the true God. And now we live in fellowship with the true God because we live in fellowship with his Son, Jesus Christ. He is the only true God, and he is eternal life.” Yes, salvation is a matter of faith—faith that God became human in Jesus; that He paid our sin debt by dying on the cross; that he arose again to confirm his claim. Jesus arose from the dead and is alive today. When we submit to Jesus, God’s Spirit living within us assures us that we did not make a mistake.
