The late Dr. S. M. Lockridge was a refreshing African American preacher. Here is part of one sermon in praise of Jesus the Christ: He’s God’s Son. He is the sinner’s Savior. He is the centerpiece of civilization. He supplies strength to the weak. He is available for the tempted and the tried. He sympathizes and He sees. He guards and He guides. He is the key to knowledge. He is the wellspring of wisdom. He is the pathway of peace. He is the roadway of righteousness. He is the highway of holiness. He is the gateway of glory. He is the master of the mighty. He is the captain of the conquerors. He is the head of heroes. He is the leader of legislators. He is the Prince of princes, the King of Kings, and the Lord of lords. His promise is sure. His life is matchless. His goodness is limitless. His love never changes. His Word is enough. His grace is sufficient. His reign is righteous. His yoke is easy and His burden is light.” Dr. Lockridge’s praise of our Lord brings to mind King David’s words in Psalm 9: “I will praise you, LORD, with all my heart; I will tell of all the marvelous things you have done. I will be filled with joy because of you.” Today, we can add to this list because of all Christ means to us and has done for us—personally and collectively.
