When doctors to take care of people with contagious viruses they wear protective gear like non-porous clothing, rubber boots, hoods, and respirator. They do it to avoid catching viruses that otherwise could kill them. This only helps to illustrate why God gave ancient Israel a way to experience His presence without dying. God is so holy that no human can dwell in his presence and live. The only exception to this reality is when God permits us to draw near Him under terms He sets. Under the covenant God had with ancient Israel, only a priest was allowed to approach God on behalf of a worshiper. The priest had to follow God’s instruction of offering animal blood as a substitute for the worshiper. This system served until God sent His Son to offer himself as a sacrifice for all humanity. Today God accepts all worshipers who approach Him in the name of Jesus Christ, His Son. That is what John the Baptist meant when he said of Jesus (John 1:29): “Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!” God gave His own Son to be an acceptable sacrifice for our sins. Now we can draw near Him, enjoy His presence and obtain His favor any time.
