Samuel Colgate, founder of the Colgate Company, was a Christian believer. Once when he attended an evangelistic meeting at his church, a street woman came down the aisle to accept Christ and to join the church. She was weeping a she came. Colgate sensed the members squirming at the thought of her joining, so he got up and said, “I guess we blundered when we asked God to save people. We forgot to specify what kind of sinners we want.” Suddenly, somebody arose and made a motion to accept the woman into membership, and it passed unanimously. Some people misunderstand God’s nature of love and Christ’s desire to reconcile all people to Himself. The Apostle Paul wrote, “God has given us the task of reconciling people to him. God was in Christ reconciling the world to himself no longer counting people’s sins against them. And he gave us this wonderful message of reconciliation. So we are Christ’s ambassadors; God is making his appeal through us. We speak for Christ when we plead, “Come back to God!” For God made Christ, who never sinned, to be the offering for our sin, so that we could be made right with God through Christ.” Within the church, Christ’s Body, there can be no big “I’s” and little “You’s.” God accepts all people, and so should we.
