In one of Aesop’s fables, an ant worked all day, all summer to collect grains of wheat. The grasshopper scorned the ant for working so hard. Soon summer ended and winter came. The grasshopper got cold and hungry and wondered what he would do. He went to the ant and begged her for food. The ant told him, “All summer long I worked hard while you made fun of me. You should have thought of winter then.” Then the ant shut the door in the grasshopper’s face. Jesus once told a story (Luke Chapter 16) to stress our need to plan. He said a certain rich man had a manager to handle his affairs. One day the boss heard that the manager was cheating, so he called him in and said, “Get your report in order; you are going to be fired.” The manager thought, “Now what? My boss is firing me. I can’t dig ditches, and I am too proud to beg.” So he invited each man who owed money to his boss to rewrite his invoice. He reduced the bill of one-man who owed 800 gallons of oil to 400. For another, he reduced his bill from 1000 bushels of wheat to 800. In this way, he made friends of the debtors, so they would befriend him after his boss fired him. Jesus told this story to warn us that we must plan for our future, because a day of giving account to God will surely come to each of us. We begin to prepare for that day by accepting Jesus Christ as our Savior and Lord.
