Many of the Founding Fathers of America were deists. That is, they believed God exists and that He created the world, but that once created, He left it to run by itself. They would say that events since creation are natural, unplanned, and unguided by any supernatural means. Beliefs such as these are contrary to what the Bible reveals. While we do not always know when and how God breaks into history, the Scriptures reveal that God does intervene, and even controls, what happens—to accomplish His wise purposes. Here is just one example from Jeremiah Chapter 30: “This is what the LORD says: When I bring Israel home again from captivity and restore their fortunes, Jerusalem will be rebuilt on its ruins, and the palace reconstructed as before. There will be joy and songs of thanksgiving, and I will multiply my people, not diminish them; I will honor them and not despise them. Their children will prosper as they did long ago. I will establish them as a nation before me, and I will punish anyone who hurts them. They will have their own ruler again, and he will come from their own people.” Almighty God has plans, not only for His people Israel, but also for each of His children. When we by faith accept His Son as our Savior, and submit to do His will, God works our circumstances for His own purposes, and for our good.
