People living in crowded cities often miss the beauty of the moon — streetlights block their view. Of course, we all know that the moon gets its light from the sun’s reflection. So without the sun, the moon would never shine. So the sun is more critical to us. Without it, life on earth would disappear. Our need for the sun can remind us of how much we need God. The Bible repeatedly refers to God as light. Not only is He the source of our life, He sustains us daily, and He determines our destiny. When God’s Son came into the world, He declared that He is the light of the world. To help us understand what this means, the Apostle John wrote this in his Gospel: “In the beginning the Word already existed. The Word was with God, and the Word was God. He existed in the beginning with God. God created everything through him and nothing was created except through him. The Word gave life to everything that was created, and his life brought life to everyone.” As God’s light, Jesus can not only transform our present existence, He offers eternal life to all who accept Him. The symbol of light is so apt and powerful that Jesus went on to say to us. “You are the light of the world.” We who have light and life from Him must now spread it to others — with our lips, our lives, and our deeds.
