Some musical lyrics today are so debased in the way they degrade women. Surveys show this is not just an American problem—it’s worldwide. Immature men mistreat women as their way to dominate and control them. Some music lyrics reflect this debased attitude. Young men, especially, need to see models of how to treat females. Notice Solomon’s description of love for his wife. Despite his later faults, he knew how to respect and treat his wife. In the Song of Songs chapter 6, we find this: “You are beautiful, my darling, like the lovely city of Tirzah. Yes, as beautiful as Jerusalem, as majestic as an army with billowing banners. Turn your eyes away, for they overpower me. Your hair falls in waves, like a flock of goats winding down the slopes of Gilead. Your teeth are as white as sheep that are freshly washed. Your smile is flawless, each tooth matched with its twin. Your cheeks are like rosy pomegranates behind your veil. Even among sixty queens and eighty concubines and countless young women, I would still choose my dove, my perfect one—the favorite of her mother, dearly loved by the one who bore her.” Solomon was not talking trash to his wife; he was expressing genuine admiration and love for her. Today’s husbands and lovers can learn from Solomon.
