In one of Babe Ruth’s last games, he was not as agile as he once was. He fumbled the ball, threw wildly, and let five runs score. As he walked off the field embarrassed, the fans booed him terribly. But one boy jumped over the rail, ran to him, and with tears in his eyes, embraced him as his hero. He remembered Ruth’s past as a terrific player. God said through the prophet Malachi that He keeps a record of those who remember, revere, and talk about him to others. We read in Mal. CH 3: “Then those who feared the Lord spoke with each other, and the Lord listened to what they said. In his presence, a scroll of remembrance was written to record names of those who feared him and always thought about the honor of his name. “They will be my people,” says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies. “On the day when I act in judgment, they will be my own special treasure.” So today, rather than joining cynics who take for granted God’s peerless record of giving us life, health, and eternal salvation, we can instead, join with those who honor the Lord. They gather with others to worship him and talk about the benefits they enjoy. They know that such activities thrill the heart of God, even as they encourage us along the way.
