As a faithful believer was dying, he said to his pastor, “I can’t recall a single one of God’s promises I used to claim.” His pastor replied, “Don’t worry. God has not forgotten any of them.” With that, the old man died in peace. God assured His ancient people that He had not forgotten His promises to them. They had spent 70 years in exile after breaking their covenant with God. Now, near the end of their stay, God assures them that he had not forgotten His promise to let them go home. He gave them a poetic message by Isaiah the prophet (Isaiah Chapter 40): “Comfort, comfort my people,” says your God. “Speak tenderly to Jerusalem. Tell her that her sad days are gone and her sins are pardoned. Make a straight highway through the wasteland for our God! Fill in the valleys, and level the mountains and hills. Straighten the curves, and smooth out the rough places. Then the glory of the LORD will be revealed; all people will see it together. The LORD has spoken!” God assured His people that He had not forgotten them. He is the same God who offers assurance to us today. Though difficult times come, we need not despair. God has promised never to leave those who truly belong to Him. It is as David Nicholas once said, “God’s promises are like the stars; the darker the night, the brighter they shine.
