The $300 million gift that the University of Chicago recently received was topped by a $400 million gift to Harvard University. Gifts like these enable such institutions to carry on their specialty of graduate studies. But based on how God values giving, huge donations cannot outweigh the value of giving by the “least of these.” Jesus explained that as He sat in the Temple and watched the wealthy cast their offerings. We read this in Mark chapter 12: “Jesus sat down near the collection box in the Temple and watched as the crowds dropped in their money. Many rich people put in large amounts. Then a poor widow came and dropped in two small coins. Jesus called the disciples to him and said, ‘I tell you the truth, this poor widow has given more than all the others who are making contributions. For they gave a tiny part of their surplus, but she, poor as she is, has given everything she had to live on.’” Today, we should give as much as we can to support worthy causes in the world, but especially causes that promote the kingdom of God. Yet we ought to make sure we are not giving to earn our way to heaven, or to promote self, but are giving from the heart—to honor Jesus Christ and to show love to others.
