A school dismissed a Christian teacher from her job after she discussed her faith with a mother and her sick child. The school eventually reinstated the teacher, but it raises the question of whether it is appropriate for God’s people to share their faith in public. I do not presume to know all the legal ramifications of the freedom of speech clause in our Constitution, nor do I dare try to speak for all Christians. But I am persuaded by certain words of Jesus. He came from heaven and identified himself as God’s Son. His character, teachings, and miracles, especially His resurrection from the dead, all testify that He is God in the flesh. He therefore speaks with divine authority and we dare not ignore what He said. After rising from the dead, He gathered His followers to him and left them with this mission: “I have been given all authority in heaven and on earth. Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and Son and the Holy Spirit. Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Of course, we share our faith with wisdom. We would not cheat our employer by using time devoted to work to witness. We would not badger people who say they do not want to hear. But never to speak of our faith ignores our Lord’s commission.
