Dr. Charles Tindley wrote the song, “I Shall Overcome” back in 1903. In the early 1960s, the civil rights movement changed the words and sang it as “We Shall Over Come.” Dr. Tindley was a Methodist minister who wrote 47 hymns. Another popular one, entitled, “Leave it there,” says “If the world from you withholds of its silver and its gold, And you have to get along with meager fare, Just remember in His word how He feeds the little bird–Take your burden to the Lord and leave it there.” God conveyed that same truth to His ancient people through the prophet Isaiah. They were depressed, living in exile, wondering if God had forgotten them. God sent this message to encourage them, “Don’t be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be discouraged, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you. I will hold you up with my victorious right hand.” Jesus also encouraged His followers with these words, recorded in Matthew 6:31, “Don’t worry about such things as “What will we eat? What will we drink? What will we wear? These things dominate the thoughts of unbelievers, but your heavenly Father already knows all your needs. Seek the kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.” This is a timely promise for God’s people when times are hard. God calls us to trust Him and not worry.
