Frederick Douglass, the abolitionist was discouraged. While speaking in Boston, he expressed frustration that God had not liberated African Americans from slavery. Sojourner Truth was in the audience. She jumped to her feet, interrupted his speech, and asked “Frederick, Is God dead?” Her question yanked him out of his despair. Ancient Israel had the same faithless attitude when the Philistines and Goliath invaded their land. But young David believed God. When he heard the taunts of Goliath, he asked, “Who is this pagan that he defies the armies of the living God?” David’s boast got back to King Saul. He sent for David. David said to Saul, “Don’t worry about this giant. I’ll go fight him!” Saul said, “You are too young and inexperienced.” David persisted, “I take care of my father’s sheep and goats.” “When a lion or a bear comes to steal a lamb, I go after it with a club and rescue the lamb from its mouth. If it turns on me, I catch it by the jaw and club it to death. I have done this to both lions and bears, and I’ll do it to this giant, for he has defied the armies of the living God! The LORD who rescued me from the claws of the lion and the bear will rescue me from this giant!” Saul consented and the rest is history. David’s past victories with God’s help gave him confidence to face the giant and win. Let us strive to be like David and like Sojourner Truth.
