When Hurricane Katrina struck New Orleans in 2005, 12 feet of water surged over the floodwalls and inundated complete neighborhoods. Theories abound on why the walls failed but the reality is they failed and 1,600 people lost their lives. That historical event illustrates the point Jesus made to warn us we must build our lives on a solid foundation. Here is what we read by Jesus in Luke Chapter 6: “So why do you keep calling me ‘Lord, Lord!’ when you don’t do what I say? I will show you what it’s like when someone comes to me, listens to my teaching, and then follows it. It is like a person building a house who digs deep and lays the foundation on solid rock. When the floodwaters rise and break against that house, it stands firm because it is well built. But anyone who hears and doesn’t obey is like a person who builds a house right on the ground, without a foundation. When the floods sweep down against that house, it will collapse into a heap of ruins.” These are not the words by some well-meaning philosopher. Jesus words are totally reliable because they come from God’s Son, God’s heaven’s sent messenger. People who ignore Jesus the Christ do so to their great and eternal loss.
