The inability of a mother to bear children is often painful. One mother who’s been there found comfort reflecting on these biblical principles: 1) Remember God is sovereign over life in every detail. 2) God is doing what is best for us even when we cannot see it. 3) God’s timing and ways are infinitely better than ours. And 4) Suffering and waiting transforms our character. Years ago Hannah was experiencing great emotional anguish because she was unable to bear a child. Her pain was made even more unbearable because another woman who could bear children made fun of her. Year after year she prayed and waited. We read in 1 Samuel 1 how Eli, the priest, saw her praying silently in the Tabernacle. Thinking she was intoxicated, he criticized her. But after she explained she was not drunk but pouring out heart to God for a child, he said, “In that case, go in peace! May the God of Israel grant the request you have asked of him.” She and her husband went home in peace and shortly afterward, God’s timing came. She bore a son who became a leader for her nation. Accepting God’s will and way and timing always brings the greatest joy.
