As American citizens, we have the right to express ourselves, to worship as we wish, to have a fair jury trial, to vote in elections, to run for elective office, and to pursue life, liberty, and happiness. Our Citizenship duties include supporting and defending the Constitution, staying informed of community issues, voting in elections, respecting and obeying all laws, respecting the rights, beliefs, and opinions of others, participating in community activities, paying our income and other taxes, serving on a jury when called, and if the need arises defending our country. Clearly, these citizenship duties are in line with what the Bible teaches on how followers of Christ are to act toward the government. We read in Romans Chapter 13, “Everyone must submit to governing authorities. For all authority comes from God, and those in positions of authority have been placed there by God.” Pay your taxes and government fees to those who collect them, and give respect and honor to those who are in authority. “Owe nothing to anyone—except for your obligation to love one another.” So even though some are often denied citizenship rights, as followers of Christ, we strive to be good citizens.
