In 1575 Martin Frobisher thought he was on to something. He left England looking for a shorter passage into Asia. He never found it, but he did come home with a huge load of what he thought was gold; it turned out to be iron pyrite–fool’s gold, worth nothing. Things are not always what they seem to be. The Apostle Paul used a similar illustration to explain that Jewish unbelief in his day was not a final condition. One day they would come to their senses and their unbelief would change to belief. This principle of reversals also applies to other areas as well. In Romans Ch. 11, Paul quotes King David as saying, “Let their bountiful table become a snare, a trap that makes them think all is well.” Today some people think their wealth, position, and power make them successful. One day they may learn they have only fool’s gold. Such attainments may well serve them in this life. But Jesus was very emphatic in saying those who are first today will be last tomorrow. Those on top today will be on the bottom tomorrow. It pays to be genuinely connected to God who holds our destiny and not be tricked by fool’s gold.
