According to a Bloomberg Article, American agricultural farmers are hurting because they need workers to harvest their crops. In 2011, North Carolina needed 6500 farm workers. Even though the state had 500,000 unemployed, only 268 applied; of the 163 that were hired only seven local workers stayed the entire growing season. Not only are workers needed for American farming, Jesus saw a crucial need for kingdom workers. Here is what he said to his disciples as we find in Matthew Chapter 9: “When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them because they were confused and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. He said to his disciples, “The harvest is great, but the workers are few. So pray to the Lord who is in charge of the harvest; ask him to send more workers into his fields.” Jesus had this vision of a great harvest about to be lost as He traveled around noticing helpless hurting people. His heart was moved because he saw them from God’s perspective. When we draw near to God and see people from His viewpoint we develop compassion for them.
