Nike pays Lebron James and Tiger Woods big money to represent its brand. It’s how Nike promotes its name to the public. When Jesus came to establish the Kingdom of God, He invited common fishermen to represent Him—to be his first disciples, to learn from him, to commit themselves to Him so they could spread his Kingdom agenda in the world. We read in Matthew Chapter 4 that in calling them Jesus said, “Come, follow me, and I will show you how to fish for people!”
Today Jesus still invites some people to leave their ordinary work and devote all their time spreading the Good News. But He invites all of us to represent Him by avoiding the abuse of our bodies with drugs, alcohol, and sexual immorality. He wants us to represent Him by never exploiting others for financial gain, or by not abusing others in our positions of power over them. Rather, Jesus invites us to learn from Him and represent Him wherever life takes us—at home, on the job, commuting, shopping, on vacation,—wherever and whatever we are doing. He wants us to represent Him in all our speech and actions.
