American farmers grow nearly 3 billion bushels of wheat each year–on 65 million acres of land. One acre can produce 40 bushels; one grain can produce 8 heads with 40 seeds on each head. One acre of wheat can produce enough bread to feed a family of four for 10 years.
Jesus used wheat production to teach a truth we all need. His words are in John Chapter 12, “I tell you the truth, unless a kernel of wheat is planted in the soil and dies, it remains alone. But its death will produce many new kernels—a plentiful harvest of new lives.” The first lesson He taught was that He himself had to die in order to give life to those who would accept Him as their sin-bearer and entrust their lives to Him. They will enjoy eternal life. Jesus went on to say, “Those who love their life in this world will lose it. Those who care nothing for their life in this world will keep it for eternity.” So in order to enjoy a truly productive and fulfilled life, Jesus invites us to abandon the lifestyle that is self-centered. Instead, He invites us to a radical approach to living—one that places Him first, others second; and self, third.
