When a child goes out the door, many parents take time to say, “Be sure you act in a way that does not bring disgrace on our family.” Parents urge children to represent their family name with distinction. Similarly, the Apostle Paul urges God’s children to do the same: to live in a way that brings honor to God, their Father in heaven. Here is how he put it in Ephesians Ch 4: “Therefore I, a prisoner for serving the Lord, beg you to lead a life worthy of your calling, for you have been called by God.” Paul makes this plea after telling them about many wonderful blessings God has bestowed on those who have accepted His Son by faith. His logic is that when we recognize the depth of God’s love for us, we gladly humble ourselves because of His grace, and we will long to be His worthy representatives. Paul also recognizes several ways unity exists in God’s salvation program. The apostle says we should strive to keep unity within the body of Christ since unity is the reason God placed us in community. At church we not only receive personal enrichment, but by using our abilities for the benefit of the group, we can more fully promote Christ and His Kingdom agenda.
