One woman has decided to retire on a cruise ship. She says it’s cheaper than a nursing home. On a cruise ship you get a luxury bed every night, 10 scrumptious meals a day, three swimming pools, a workout room, washer, dryer, entertainment, a doctor on call, and a chance to visit countries the world over–all on a cruise for one price. As the Apostle Paul was ending his epistle to the new church in Thessalonica, he reminded them of some of the benefits they could enjoy as God’s people in fellowship with each other. He told them they could receive from Almighty God all they needed to live productive lives. He closed with this counsel: honor your leaders; be patient with each other; never pay back evil for evil; do good to all people; always be joyful; never stop praying; be thankful in all circumstances. He then prays that the God of peace would make them holy in every way, and that their whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless until our Lord Jesus Christ comes again. He says “God will make this happen, for he who calls you is faithful.” Followers of Christ are in a good place, not only today here on earth; we’re ready for eternal living–far better than even a cruise on a ship.
