Some before and after photographs are striking—especially when they show the after-effects of hurricanes, tornadoes, or fires. We stand in awe at the power of destructive weather events. They remind us of what God told His ancient people if they rejected and disobeyed Him. We read His warning to them in 1 Kings Chapter 9. God told Solomon what will happen to the imposing buildings he erected if the people turn away from God. God said, “If you or your descendants abandon me and disobey the commands and decrees I have given you, and if you serve and worship other gods, then I will uproot Israel from this land that I have given them. I will reject this Temple that I have made holy to honor my name.” “And though this Temple is impressive now, all who pass by will be appalled and will shake their heads in amazement. They will ask, ‘Why did the LORD do such terrible things to this land and to this Temple?’ “And the answer will be, ‘Because his people abandoned the LORD their God.” This outcome for them reminds us of words from Hebrews 10:31, “It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.” Yes, God is loving, kind, and merciful, but He is also a God who judges evil.
