Frederick Lehman tried to capture the immensity of God’s love with these images: If we could turn all the oceans into ink, all the skies into one giant scroll, could turn every stalk into an ink pen, and turn every person into a skilled writer, even then we could never fully describe the vastness of God’s love. God is without limit not only in love but in every way we can conceive of him. In 2 Chronicles 6, we read how King Solomon in dedicating the newly-built Temple, spoke of God’s vastness. He portrayed the Temple as the place where God promised to meet with His people. Solomon asked God to put His name on the Temple, showing God’s possession and ownership of it. Yet Solomon knew and said God is too immense, too vast to be localized in a manmade Temple. Yet Solomon’s successor, Jesus Christ, would one day come to earth and live among us as a human being. He would show the potential of what God expects from human beings. He would show the infinite nature of God’s love by offering himself as the atoning sacrifice to bring us into harmony with God. By faith in Him we can know and fulfill God’s purpose for us. We can love and worship God; love people and use our abilities to make a difference in our world.
