Charles Spurgeon once said this about God’s promises: “Just as the sun never grows weary of shining or a stream grow weary of flowing, so it is God’s nature to keep His promises; therefore, go immediately to His throne and say, ‘Do as you promised.’” Some 4,000 years ago, God made Himself known to Abraham. We read this in Hebrews 11, “God called him to leave home and go to another land that God would give him as his inheritance. He went without knowing where he was going. And even when he reached the land God promised him, he lived there by faith.” God promised Abraham children as numerous as the stars in the sky. Yet despite the failings of his physical descendants, God gave him offspring that resulted in the arrival of the Messiah—2000 years later. Today half of the 7 billion people in the world claim Abraham as their founding father. And since Christ came and died for the sins of the world, God is still expanding Abraham’s family fulfilling the promise God made to him 4000 years ago—an amazing demonstration of God’s faithfulness to keep His Word—another reason we can rely on God’s many promises to us.
