In the long-running TV drama “Touched by an Angel,” angels visited the earth on assignment. They were portrayed as heavenly beings that worked together to visit troubled people. They delivered messages of hope, assuring the hurting that God loved them and cared for them even though, in the show, angels did not always solve people’s problems. The book of Hebrews makes the compelling case that Jesus Christ is superior to angels. The writer seeks to eradicate any thought that we should worship angels. We read this in chapter 1: “God never said to any angel what He said to Jesus: ‘You are my Son. Today I have become your Father.’ And when he brought his supreme Son into the world, God said, ‘Let all of God’s angels worship Him.’ … And God never said to any of the angels, ‘Sit in the place of honor at my right hand until I humble your enemies, making them a footstool under your feet.’ [Angels] are only servant-spirits sent to care for people who will inherit salvation.” The Bible teaches that angels are God’s messengers. Among their duties, they serve and care for those who inherit salvation through Jesus Christ our Lord. Though angels may not identify themselves to us as such, we can rejoice that God uses them to serve us, His people.
