Studies show couples that live together without marriage are more violent, have less satisfying sex, more divorce, less money, and less emotional wellbeing. Emotional insecurity is from knowing they might break up at any time. On the other hand, most married couples enjoy greater marital satisfaction because of their mutual commitment to be faithful to one another. The covenant of marriage illustrates the union between Christ and His followers. When we accept Christ as our Savior, we become united with Him. We can anticipate a future that is secure, fulfilling, and never ending. Union with Christ allows us to pursue the essentials of life here on earth with purpose—education, careers, finances, social justice, and community. Paul found—as we do–that when we accept Christ we enjoy a fulfilling and lasting union that exceeds all other relationships. He wrote in Philippians 3, “I once thought these things [other relationships and achievements] were valuable, but now I consider them worthless because of what Christ has done. Yes, everything else is worthless when compared with the infinite value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord.” Paul is absolutely right. No relationship can match the one Christ offers those who accept him.
