A recent report by the Institute of Medicine says child abuse and child neglect is a serious problem in our country. The report says the mistreatment of children puts them “at risk for learning problems, depression and anxiety, conduct disorders, and post-traumatic stress.” When these abused children become adults, they find it extremely difficult to thrive. Jesus warned us never to abuse or neglect children. We read in Matthew Chapter 18 that Jesus called a little child to Him and said to His status-seeking disciples, “I tell you the truth, unless you turn from your sins and become like little children, you will never get into the Kingdom of Heaven. So anyone who becomes as humble as this little child is the greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven.” Jesus also said, “Anyone who welcomes a little child like this on my behalf is welcoming me. But if you cause one of these little ones who trusts in me to fall into sin, it would be better for you to have a large millstone tied around your neck and be drowned in the depths of the sea.” Child abuse and child neglect are serious matters. Those in power over children—parents, relatives, church leaders, children’s agencies, businesses, or political leaders—should take notice. God holds accountable all those who abuse or neglect children.
