When a United States President-elect assumes office, he takes this oath defined by our Constitution: “I solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, to preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States.” Most presidents add “so help me God.” They add this because they know to fulfill the duties of this office requires supernatural help. In asking God’s help, they’re doing what King David did years ago. As the leader of ancient Israel, he knew he needed inner strength and integrity to serve as king. In Psalm 101, David pledges his integrity before God and his people: “I will be careful to live a blameless life. … I will lead a life of integrity in my own home. I will refuse to look at anything vile and vulgar. I hate all who deal crookedly; I will have nothing to do with them. I will reject perverse ideas and stay away from evil. … I will search for faithful people to be my companions. Only those who are above reproach will be allowed to serve me. I will not allow deceivers to serve in my house, and liars will not stay in my presence.” David’s pledge to lead a life of integrity as king and leader of his people should be the heart cry of every leader today.
