Years ago, Derek Redmond was rounding the track on his 400-meter race when he crumpled down with a torn hamstring. Paramedics rushed to help him, but he refused their help, choosing to hop and crawl on to finish. Suddenly, his father charged out of the stands, took him by the waist, and helped him limp to the finish line. Fans in the stands went wild praising his father’s love. In Luke 15, we read about a shepherd’s love in a story Jesus told: “If a man had a hundred sheep and one of them gets lost, what will he do? Won’t he leave the ninety-nine others in the wilderness and go search for the one that is lost until he finds it? And when he has found it, he will joyfully carry it home on his shoulders. When he arrives, he will call together his friends and neighbors, saying, ‘Rejoice with me because I have found my lost sheep.’ In the same way, there is more joy in heaven over one lost sinner who repents and returns to God than over ninety-nine others who are righteous and haven’t strayed away!” Jesus’ story reminds us that God’s love for sinners is infinitely greater than the man who loved his son. When God saw our helpless situation, He sent His precious Son Jesus to rescue us. God’s love for us is far greater than we can ever imagine.
