More than 100 billionaires have signed a pledge to give away at least half of their money. Warren Buffett has already done it. Hopefully, some do it because they know the risks of hoarding money. Jesus alerts us on how riches can deceive. Wealth promises pleasure, security, and influence. Indeed, some people enjoy these fleeting benefits, but Jesus, in Matthew chapter 6, tells us that if acquiring money is our sole objective in life, it will blind us to other realities. The excessive passion for money can keep us from fulfilling our prior duty toward Almighty God. It is why Jesus said “You cannot serve both God and money.” And since earthly wealth has value only in this life, He cautions us to store our treasures in heaven where they cannot lose value or be stolen. To those who think they cannot survive by putting God ahead of money, He says this: just as God takes care of birds and flowers because they fulfill the purpose for which God created them, so our Heavenly Father will take care of us IF–if we focus on doing what God created us to do—to seek HIS kingdom and live righteously. So our challenge is to exercise faith in our Heavenly Father as a priority. Then use the time, abilities, and resources He gives to live righteously and make a difference in our world.
