Gazing at the sun can cause blindness even with sunglasses or looking with a camera—like an iPhone. That’s because the sun is so powerful, radiation penetrates such protection and causes eye damage. The powerful glow of the sun to the eyes helps illustrate the glory and majesty of God. God gave ancient Israel strict rules on when and how they could approach the place He chose to permit His presence—the Holy of Holies. Only the High Priest could enter that special place and only in the proscribed way—lest he die! The High Priest could enter the Holy of Holies only on the Day of Atonement. To prepare for that event, he had to offer a blood sacrifice—first for himself, and then a separate sacrifice for the entire nation. We read in Leviticus chapter 16 that “through this process, he will purify the Most Holy Place, and he will do the same for the entire Tabernacle because of the defiling sin and rebellions of the Israelites.” Thank God, Jesus came. Jesus fulfilled all these critical requirements on our behalf. God declared Him and only Him to be a suitable High Priest to offer a perfect sacrifice for our sins. When we accept God’s Son, He shields us from the consuming effects of God’s glory. Now we can enter God’s presence at any time. There we find grace to help us in our many times of need.
