A survey by the Religion News Service shows that some people don’t tell the truth about church attendance. The report says that on the phone, people exaggerate how often they go, but online, when they think they are anonymous, they are more honest. Based on that research, actual church attendance is less than the polls show. Then other research shows people produce more when they set aside one day in seven for rest and worship. One Harvard expert on work says, “Just as we are called to work, we are called to rest.” God made this clear to His ancient people Israel. We read God’s words in Exodus chapter 20. Moses told the people, “This is what the LORD commanded: Tomorrow will be a day of complete rest, a holy Sabbath day set apart for the LORD. So bake or boil as much as you want today, and set aside what is left for tomorrow.” When the Lord Jesus was here on earth, He clarified that God is pleased when we do good on the Sabbath because it was made for our benefit. Since Christ arose from the dead, most Christians set aside the first day of the week to rest and worship. We do it knowing that it honors God, but also because it refreshes the body and spirit and results in our being more productive the rest of the week.
