A recent program designed to keep families together gave a promising report. The pilot program saw an increase in school attendance and decreases in foster care, child abuse, and health issues. Our own observations over the years show that when the head of a household has faith in Christ, that person can influence the rest of the family. So keeping families intact has huge social and spiritual implications. The Apostle Paul may not have been thinking specifically about all of this, but his actions illustrate the outcome of a family head embracing Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord. This happened at Philippi when Paul and Silas were jailed for preaching the Gospel. We learn from Acts 16 that the earthquake that shook loose the prison shackles left a great impact on the jailer. He fell before Paul and Silas asking, “What must I do to be saved?” To which Paul replied, “Believe in the Lord Jesus and you will be saved along with everyone in your household.” Led by the jailer, his entire household turned to Christ and participated in showing kindness to Paul and Silas. Today, we should do all we can to help families stay together and help them find resources that transmit moral and spiritual values to their households.
