All through history, in our country and abroad, groups of people have tried to establish a community where everyone can share and share alike. But most fail miserably, primarily because of the self-centered nature of the human heart. People find it extremely difficult to get along with each other. So when God promised ancient Israel that He would one day establish a society where people live in harmony, we long to see that day. We read God’s promise in Ezekiel chapter 36. God says, “I will give you a new heart, and I will put a new spirit in you. I will take out your stubborn stony heart, and give you a tender responsive heart. And I will put my Spirit in you so that you will follow my decrees and be careful to obey my regulations. … You will be my people, and I will be your God. I will cleanse you of your filthy behavior.” We know that day won’t come fully until Jesus Christ returns from heaven. But until then, we have the chance to glimpse community and harmony. It can happen when we accept Jesus Christ as our Savior and Lord; when we surrender ourselves to God’s Holy Spirit; when we come together as the family of Christ; and instead of being so self-centered, we become community-centered, and we focus our hearts, minds, and resolve on doing the will of God.
