Experts say distracted drivers themselves are the cause most auto accidents, more than fatigue, intoxication, speeding, or hostile driving. In a similar way, a young King Zedekiah was the cause of his own trouble. God’s prophet Jeremiah warned him that he should give in to the Babylonians, but he refused to do so. So we read in 2 Kings chapter 25 that King Nebuchadnezzar led his entire Babylonian army against Jerusalem. His soldiers built siege ramps against its walls and kept the city under siege until all the food was gone. Then they broke down the city walls and captured the city. During the night, the soldiers slipped through the gate and tried to escape, but the Babylonian troops chased them. They caught Zedekiah and took him to the king of Babylon at Riblah. They made Zedekiah watch as they slaughtered his sons, then gouged out his eyes, bound him in bronze chains, and led him away to Babylon—a tragic end to a young king who ignored God, ignored His prophet, and ignored his own covenant obligations. Divine principles do not change. If we violate God’s moral laws, we can expect consequences, either in this life or in the life to come. That is why wise people turn from their sinful lifestyle to God. They place their trust in God and depend on His Son and His Spirit to help them do the right things.
