Experts say by the year 2050, $25 trillion will pass from one generation to the next. And they say this will create enormous wealth for people who did not work for it, but inherited it. And with wealth come status, power, and privilege. Inheritance laws are ancient and exist all over the world. God promised Abraham an inheritance. The Bible tells us that Jesus, as God’s Son, has inherited all that God possesses. The writer of Hebrews quotes Psalm 8 to show God’s initial purpose was to have humans inherit and rule over creation. Psalm 8 informs us that God gave man authority to rule over all things but it did not happen. After human failure, the author of Hebrews wrote, “What we do see is Jesus, who was given a position ‘a little lower than the angels’; and because he suffered death for us, he is now ‘crowned with glory and honor.’” Jesus earned the right to inherit and rule over God’s creation. He qualified by totally submitting to God, coming to earth, and dying for our sins. Now Jesus has inherited all things, and all who accept Him as their Savior and King are joint heirs with Him. Yes, in this world, we work to earn our living because God created us to work. And God expects justice so able-bodied people can find jobs. But when our work here is done, we have an eternal inheritance that cannot fade or lose its value. It is reserved for us as co-heirs with Jesus Christ.
