The term “jack of all trades” goes back hundreds of years. It describes a person who has a lot of skills and often adds “master of none.” But this kind of designation could never apply to God’s Holy Spirit, even though He does many things for us, and most importantly, He lives inside of those who accept Jesus Christ as their Savior. Before Jesus left the earth, He said the Holy Spirit would come when He returned to heaven. The Holy Spirit came on the Day of Pentecost and has been living inside of believers ever since. The Bible gives Him several names to help us understand what He does for us. He is called the Spirit of Life because He imparts God’s life to us when we accept Christ. He is called the Spirit of Adoption because He adopts us into the family of God. He is called the Spirit of Power because He empowers us to do the will of God. He is called the Spirit of Truth because He teaches us the truth about God. He is called the Spirit of Holiness because He helps us to lead a holy life. He is called the Spirit of Wisdom because He helps us make wise decisions. In John 15:26, Jesus called Him “the Counselor” because He counsels and encourages us in times of need. It is He who convicts of sin, of righteousness, and of judgment to come. He does so many great things for us that we shudder to think what life would be like without Him.
