Most, if not all of us, have had times when Murphy’s Law was in full force—all that could go wrong seemed to go wrong all at once. Things can go wrong in our environment, our relationships, and inside of us. Here are three common things about the storms of life. They are inevitable—we all have tough times. Storms are unpredictable—they come suddenly and unexpectedly; and storms happen to good and bad people alike. Our reaction to storms is really what counts. Job’s experience is educational—recorded in Job Chapter 1: God wanted to prove to Satan that Job would not bend under pressure, so God let Satan test him. Suddenly, raiders rushed in and stole all of Job’s livestock and killed his farm workers. Lightning struck his children’s home and all of them died. But Job did not panic and curse God. Instead, he stood up, tore his robe in grief, shaved his head, and fell to the ground to worship. He said, “I came naked from my mother’ womb, and I will be naked when I leave. The Lord gave me what I had and the Lord has taken it away. Praise the name of the Lord!” So when unexpected storms happen to us, we can panic or we can praise God for His presence, power, and love. He has promised never to leave or forsake His own children. As we reflect on God’s presence, love, and His power for us, we begin to experience God’s peace that passes all understanding.
