As the airplane was taxing to take off, the stewardess asked Muhammad Ali to fasten his seatbelt. Ali, in his typical boastful way said, “Superman don’t need no seatbelt.” Quickly, the stewardess replied, “You’re right, but superman don’t need no airplane either.” We can excuse Ali for his playful boasting, but people who boast in defiance of God, they will one day have a rude awakening. That’s what God told us by Jeremiah. We read in Jeremiah Chapter 9, “This is what the Lord says: “Don’t let the wise boast in their wisdom, or the powerful boast in their power, or the rich boast in their riches. But those who wish to boast should boast in this alone: that they truly know me and understand that I am the Lord who demonstrates unfailing love, and who brings justice and righteousness to the earth, and that I delight in these things. I, the Lord, have spoken.” God wants us to know the value of a right relationship with Him. When He evaluates us, intellectuals cannot boast in their knowledge; people with power cannot boast of their power; nor can the wealthy boast in their money. God accepts those who have a right standing with Him because they have accepted God’s gracious gift of salvation through His Son. The Apostle John told us that when we truly accept God’s gift of salvation by faith in His Son, it will show itself by the way we live and love others.
