According to bird experts, partridges lay multiple eggs, but often abandon their nests and other birds come along and hatch them. But when the new chicks are born, they quickly fly away. They abandon the mother bird that hatched them. The Prophet Jeremiah used this illustration to make an important point. It’s recorded in Jeremiah Chapter 17. He said people who get rich by ripping off others will one day see their wealth fly away as the newly hatched birds fly away. But not only do riches gained dishonestly fly away, so do empty pleasure, or power. But Jeremiah contrasted misguided people with those who cling to God and live by His values. He wrote, “But we worship at your throne—eternal, high, and glorious! O Lord, the hope of Israel, all who turn away from you will be disgraced. They will be buried in the dust of the earth, for they have abandoned the Lord, the fountain of living water.” Jeremiah wanted the people of his day to know that there is no substitute for acknowledging God as the supreme Ruler. Since Jesus Christ arrived, He is God’s appointed Redeemer and King. Those who acknowledge Him as their Savior and Lord, base their lives on the values He left us. Not only can those who accept Him live more productively in this life, they are ready for life beyond the grave.
