Fashion forecasters predict what people will wear. They look at changing values, shifting tastes, and how much people will spend. They do research, hoping to avoid losing money on dud fashions. Sadly, some people think moral values are like fashions—that some are hot and some are not. But in Matthew Chapter 5, Jesus tells us that God’s values do not change. He said, “Don’t misunderstand why I have come. I did not come to abolish the Law of Moses or the writings of the prophets. No, I came to accomplish their purpose. I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not even the smallest details of God’s law will disappear until its purpose is achieved.” God’s laws reveal God’s standards for holy living. But since we all fall short, Jesus came to fulfill them for us. As God’s perfect Son, He kept God’s laws perfectly. When we accept Him as our Savior, God credits His perfect righteousness to us. Then God’s Spirit in us empowers us to obey God’s righteous standards—to love Him with all our hearts and to love and treat people with justice, even those who may mistreat us.
