A woman failed to see a “No trespass” sign on a bridge and she became stuck 22-feet in the air for hours. She was legally blind so her failure to see is understandable. But why did God’s ancient people ignore His clear “No trespass” signs about the Sabbath Day. We read this in Jeremiah Chapter 17: “This is what the LORD said to me: ‘Go and stand in the gate where the king goes in and out, and then in each of the other gates. Say to all the people, ‘Listen to this message from the Lord: Stop carrying on your trade at Jerusalem’s gates on the Sabbath day. Do not do your work on the Sabbath, but make it a holy day.’” In Jeremiah’s day, merchants blatantly ignored keeping the Sabbath Day holy because doing so interfered with making money. God gave that special Day as a sign of His covenant with the people. It was not just a time to stop work. They were to worship God by offering sacrifices, studying His word, and learning how to treat others. But they were so focused on making money that they ignored God. There’s a lesson here for us. Let’s be clear: God does not demand that we keep the Sabbath Day to earn salvation. Still, God created humans in such a way that we require renewal: physical, spiritual, mental, and emotional. If under God, we fail to renew ourselves, we suffer the consequences.
