Sojourner Truth was a freedom fighter who led 270 slaves from bondage in the south. Sometimes she had to convince the slaves to leave for their own best interest. Moses had the same problem as he led ancient Israel out of Egyptian slavery. Exodus Chapter 14 tells us that as the people neared the Red Sea, they looked back and saw Pharaoh and his army closing in. They panicked, complained, and blamed Moses: “Why did you bring us out here to die in the wilderness? Weren’t there enough graves for us in Egypt? What have you done to us? Why did you make us leave Egypt? Didn’t we tell you this would happen while we were still in Egypt? We said, ‘Leave us alone! Let us be slaves to the Egyptians.’ It’s better to be slaves in Egypt than a corpse in the wilderness!” The people had quickly forgotten God’s past miracles. Moses responded in faith: “Don’t be afraid. Just stand still and watch the Lord rescue you today. The Lord Himself will fight for you. Just stay calm.” At this point, Moses did not know how God would deliver—only that He would. Is that not often the way God deals with us today? Often as God’s beloved children, we groan, complain, and blame God and others when we face difficult situations. Yet God wants us, not to fear, but to stand still in faith until He wisely works things out on our behalf.
